The sag-aftra and wga strikes of 2023 are a first major reaction to some of the problems new technologies are causing in the film industry. I talked to members of the unions in LA and streaming services and generative AI reportedly have caused pressures that are negatively affecting people’s employment and wages.
There are other issues the strikes try to solve, but the question is whether there are technological solutions to a problem for which currently the only remedy appears to be legal agreements.
